Dressing for Cambodia

December and January are the best months to visit Southeast Asia.  The weather is hot but not as oppressive as it is during the summer.  Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s, which is not so different from what my hometown in Bradenton, Florida has experienced these last few weeks.

Even so, my shorts are staying at home, and I am packing mostly long-sleeve shirts.

Partly, my fashion choices reflect why I am going to Cambodia.  I will be attending a symposium hosted by a local university.  Professional dress will be casual but certainly not beach wear.  Cultural norms in Cambodia, much like any country in the world (other than the United States), consider men in shorts to be rather odd.

Wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts is also a function of protection from the sun and protection from the creatures that might bite exposed skin .  During my tours of the outer temple complexes of Angkor I will be a rainforest environment after all.
