Why I am going to Cambodia
In October 2010 I had the privilege of attending the World History Association symposium in Istanbul, Turkey on Byzantine and Ottoman Influences in world history. It was a magnificent opportunity to learn about civilizations that I had taught about for years at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Visiting Istanbul had been a great goal of mine for years. The structure of the World History Association symposium allowed me to receive a scholar's view of the city.

In June of 2011 I spoke with Marc Gilbert, a professor of Southeast Asian at Hawaii Pacific University. Marc and I have been friends since the summer of 2000. Every summer we meet up at the College Board's Advanced Placement World History exam reading. During breaks between exam scoring sessions and over meals, Marc and I talk about all sorts of topics. During one of these wide ranging discussions, he mentioned his own great interest in Cambodia and the planned symposium in Siem Reap. He said that I really must go. So I was convinced by Marc, who also is the director and organizer for the symposium.
